July 30th, 2018
When “Funkytown” comes on at a wedding, you can’t help but dance, right? What about Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” or “Bad Girls” by Donna Summer? If your answer to any of those is no, you have defied computer science. (Also, I don’t want you at my party.) Those songs are among the most “danceable” number-one hits in the history of pop, according to new research from Columbia Business School and French business school INSEAD, using data from Billboard and audio-tech company Echonest....

Eighth Grade’s R Rating Deters Actual 8th-Graders From Seeing It. What A Shame.

July 19th, 2018
You’ve got to be in at least 11th grade if you want to buy a ticket to Eighth Grade.   Bo Burnham’s new coming-of-age comedy began its theatrical run this past weekend, but prospective moviegoers in the same age bracket as lovably awkward protagonist Kayla (Elsie Fisher) were plum out of luck: In their infinite and highly arbitrary wisdom, the Motion Picture Association of America saw fit to brand the film with an R rating, barring all viewers under 17 years old unaccompanied by a parent or an adult guardian.  ...

Taking Away The Phones Won’t Solve Our Teenagers’ Problems

July 19th, 2018
Apple has introduced new software designed to help users restrict the time they spend on their phones — just change your settings and your favorite app will lock you out after a certain number of hours. It’s been especially welcomed by parents who fret about the habits of their “screenagers” — young people who seem permanently attached to their mobile devices. Even Silicon Valley insiders demanded that Apple make its devices “less addictive.” Some researchers have gone so far as to declare that...

Drake Charts 7 Songs On Billboard Top 10, Surpassing Beatles Record

July 11th, 2018
Drake has not only entered Beatles territory — he’s eclipsed it. The rapper currently claims seven of the Top 10 spots on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. That’s insane, and it also smashes the Fab Four’s record of five songs in the Top 10. Of course, the way music is delivered and consumed in 2018 is much different than 1964. And back then, during peak Beatlemania, the band of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr had all five of the Top 5 songs, with”Can’t Buy Me Love,”...
