01/14/20 Cardi B Defends Not Letting Daughter Listen To ‘WAP’
09/23/20 Cardi B’s Explicit WAP Tops Billboard Hot 100 For Fourth Week + Dominates Global 200 Chart
Who Is She
Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar (born October 11, 1992), known professionally as Cardi B, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and television personality. Born and raised in The Bronx, New York City, she first attracted attention for discussing her career as a stripper on social media; she became an Internet celebrity after several of her posts and videos went viral on Vine and Instagram. From 2015 to 2017, she appeared as a regular cast member on the VH1 reality television series Love & Hip Hop: New York to follow her music aspirations, and released two mixtapes. In 2018, Time included her on their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
What Are Her Messages
Cardi B’s messages have always been on the edge. But with her 2020 "beyond Explicit" global hit WAP, she and Megan Thee Stallion have (by her own admission) made something so dirty that even YouTube wouldn’t put it up initially. YOUTH MINISTRY ALERT! The kids in your group know this song! The raunchiness of the lyrics (only if you need a wakeup call azlyrics.com) and the music video screams that we are in a battle for the hearts, souls and earbuds of students..
What Does A Youthworker Need2Know
You can't be silent with your students (and parents) about the impact of Cardi B and her songs (particularly WAP)! This is serious! This raunchy song has been the #1 song on the planet (for August-September 2020)! Veteran Youthworker Al Forsythe has developed a strong RE:Tuned Discussion Guide based on WAP. It's a good place to start for sure!
