TobyMac’s Heartfelt Call To Repentance
By Allen Weed • interlinc President • Nashville, Tennessee
In the couple decades (OK, maybe more) that I have had the privilege to “link” artists and their music ministry with youthworkers, there have been artists with significant prophetic words for the Body of Christ.
I spent a couple hours with one of them recently– my good friend and co-laborer in youth ministry, Tobymac. As he has done over the years, he said, “I’ve got a song that has captured my heart and I’m trying to decide if I should release it. It is a tough song– a song of lament for me personally and the church. And I wonder if it is for this time we are in.”
I was stunned by the power of his Beatitudes-driven wakeup call to repentance as he shared the words…
“It is a tough song– a song of lament for me personally and the church. And I wonder if it is for this time we are in.”
-TobyMac
We say that we’re one
But we’re broken up
By anything that can divide
Our color of skin
The clothes we’re in
That valley is deep and wide
We overlook the broken
The homeless
And discard the poor
While we celebrate the rich
And the beautiful
With a wide open door
I’m sorry we’re nothing like You
You chose to bear a cross
We choose to give you parts of us
And rarely the parts that cost
Now it’s long overdue
But I can’t dilute
What we seem to have put on the shelf
I can’t speak for us all
But I gotta believe
I’m speaking for more than myself
When I say
I’m sorry, I’m sorry
I’m sorry, so sorry
I’m sorry, I’m sorry
I’m sorry, so sorry
Wake us up, wake us up, wake us up, Lord
In the unusual and historic times we live, I want to pass along Toby’s song and video to you. I hope it reminds you (as it does me) of what the Savior has done for us, brings us further to repentance, and helps us in living out and sharing the Good News. This is the hope that our world is looking for.
Please share it with your pastor, your fellow leaders, and let’s join Toby in asking the Lord to wake us– His Bride…

Blessed are the poor in spirit
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven
Blessed are they that mourn
For they shall be comforted
Blessed are the meek
For they shall inherit the earth
Blessed are they which hunger and thirst after righteousness
For they shall be filled
Blessed are the merciful
For they shall obtain mercy
Blessed are the pure in heart
For they shall see God
Blessed are the peacemakers
For they shall be called the children of God
Blessed are those which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Blessed are ye when men revile you
And persecute you
And shall say all manner of evil against you falsely
For my sake
Jesus’ words– Matthew 5
