I was sitting at my desk early this morning, praying for all the students gathering today for See You At The Pole, and I found myself thinking: “Now what?”
Highs and Lows
Thousands of students had an amazing experience this morning, praying for their school, their peers and their community. They were galvanized; they saw they weren’t alone in their faith. They felt like they could change their world.
And then they picked up their backpacks and walked in to the heart of one of the most challenging sub-cultures in America – high school.
Is it real or is it a dream?
Popular culture has a laser focus on our students. Today’s teens are tomorrow’s leaders and consumers. Marketers, media, music … all of them rely on each generation growing up and buying into their “product”. The spoken and unspoken refrain is always some version of the same thing: You want this. You need this. This is the American dream.
American Dream by Dominic Balli
That’s when I remembered the song “American Dream.” Newcomer Dominic Balli’s video is on MVL74, and his album of the same name was a hot selection in YLO85. Dominic’s sound is a fun reggae-tinged pop – one youth leader on Facebook called it the “toy in the cereal box” of YLO85 … an unexpected but very cool sounding album. And as a bonus, “American Dream” features Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D.
“American Dream” reminds us that the things we desire, as followers of Christ, should be different than the “dreams” the world would have us pursue.
I was never told that the high life
Would demand my soul such a high price
I’ve been drinking the Kool-Aid the whole time
Believing the dream till it stole mine
What about a dream where the people cry
For the healing of a land both soul and minds
Students who took part in See You At The Pole this morning had a glimpse of God’s dream – the church, unified, worshiping Him and sharing His story with others. As your students head down the halls of their high school, they face another message, a “dream” that is all about self.
Your students need this message
The Bible study for “American Dream” talks about ambition and allegiance. It’s a lesson we all need to hear, but talking about it on the heels of an experience like SYATP will further encourage your students to remember what they should be dreaming of as they navigate those halls.
