We always love to hear the stories behind the music - and especially when it comes from some of our most favorite song writers. Switchfoot shot a little video to give us a glimpse into the making of their new album "Hello Hurricane" - I think in the same way most of us really wrestle with our talks (especially a camp or outreach series) - we can catch how hard and dependent upon God Switchfoot has been as they move into these new songs. Also Check out the band on Jimmy Kimmel & some UPDATED Tour dates (below)
We've also enjoyed the opportunity to host a number of interlinc talk-backs with Switchfoot... we thought you would enjoy being able to sneak in and hear what Jon and the guys have to say about life, music & ministry.
Excerpt from the Switchfoot Talkback, Rock the Desert, Midland, TX 8/7/09
By: Scott Osterbind
Switchfoot (Tim Foreman): The song “Mess of Me” our first single is a song about fighting for reconciliation. The chorus says “I have made a mess of me, I want to get back the rest of me, and I want to spend the rest of my life alive”. It’s written from the bottom of the well looking up. It acknowledges that it’s a long way to climb, but starting that journey.
Interl’inc (Scott Osterbind): Can you share the story behind “Your Love is a Song”?
Switchfoot (Jon Foreman): There is guy named Mike Elizondo that we co-produced the record with. He is an incredible bass player; he has played on pretty much everyone’s record, produced for a lot of people that you would know their names. He and I met a while back and we really wanted to write a song together. For me it is the third part of a trilogy. “Let Your Love Be Strong” being the first song, “Your Love is Strong” is the second part and “Your Love is a Song” being the third part of the trilogy. I use to fight the idea that I would write about the same subject matter, but I have come to the conclusion that I am continually wrestling with the idea that the maker of heaven and earth would love me, so that is a song that I continually write over and over again.
Interl’inc (Scott Osterbind): The title Hello Hurricane is awesome, hurricanes cause destruction, but things can be made new afterwards.
Switchfoot (Jon Foreman): We have faced some really big storms the last couple of years, as a band and personally. I feel like the last few years of our lives have been a fight for life. Growing up on the east coast, I don’t use the word hurricane lightly. It’s a tremendous terror that rips through the neighborhood and tears down one house and leaves the next one standing. When we say hello hurricane, it means hello fear, hello destruction, and hello horror, hello to all these things that we are facing personally and as a band. The punch line for that song is “Hello Hurricane, you can’t silence my love”. That’s the context of the record for us.
Interl’inc (Scott Osterbind): Earlier a youth leader thanked you guys for coming to festivals and sharing your music with her youth group. How would you express your thanks to youth leaders for supporting Switchfoot?
Switchfoot (Chad Butler): I want to thank everyone that works with youth. I know you play a very important role in guiding young people, encouraging them, and being there for them in ways sometimes their family can’t be. I think back to growing up in the church and knowing that I was greatly influenced by the youth leaders that took time out of their schedule to be available for me. Often times I wonder what I’d being doing if I wasn’t playing drums in a rock band. I get envious of the positions you have, to be able to influence people, and to have long term relationships. We get to see people for a one day, maybe one hour tonight and we love that. However you get to follow up on those relations ships for months and years. I think that is really great and I wanted to thank you!
