ALERT! Bruno Mars' Trending and Sensual Music Video

Tuesday August 15th, 2017

Bruno Mars is a definite musical talent, and his popularity is undeniable. That’s why his latest music video, "Versace On The Floor” had 8 million views in the first 24 hours after its release. (Whoa!)

The video (and the song's lyric) is very seductive, sensual, and sexual. We asked of Team interlinc youth leaders, “How do we deal with such an overtly sexual song and video that will be seen by almost every kid in our ministries?” Here are a few of their responses.

“This song and video is in the same camp with ‘Despacito.’ Boundaries for lyrics seem to be gone, so now it is more and more common place for our kids to be hearing explicit words. We have to continue to talk about the value of healthy and wholistic relationships where boys and girls are respected for far more than their bodies. Though I would love to think they won't watch it if I tell them not to, I know better. It seems more important these days that we give them tools to discern what is a healthy and long-term relationship looks like outside of sexual satisfaction”. – Doug Ranck, Free Methodist Church, Santa Barbara, California

“Does a song like this change the way we think about sex?As a student who is chasing after God and wanting to live out the plans He has for your life, does this song change what we believe about sex and sexual purity? Do our moral boundaries change just because Bruno Mars is singing about it? First of all, I can’t afford a Versace dress… and if I could, I certainly would not want anyone throwing it on the floor. But in all seriousness, this song and video portray sex as very casual. We see them walking into two separate hotel rooms at the beginning. We are lead to believe that just a quick glance in a hallway and one song are enough for them to experience the most intimate gift our Father has ever given to us. It also paints a pretty unrealistic picture of sex… most music videos, movies and TV shows do.” – Todd Pearage, New Hanover UMC, Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania

'Someone once said, ‘Be careful of your thoughts, they become words. Be careful of your words, they become actions. Be careful of your actions, they become habits. Be careful of your habits, they become character. Be careful of your character, for it becomes your destiny.’ Lust must be conquered at the thought level. Unfortunately that is where our world takes us through music and images that mask themselves as something harmless and all about love. Let’s not be confused. We cannot become vulnerable to lust.” – Al Forsythe, Christ Prince of Peace Retreat Center, Knoxville, Tennessee
